The Pizazz of a Champagne Glass

Champagne, Anyone?

There is no better treat, at the time of celebration, than an elegant glass of champagne…As there is nothing like a top quality bubbly to lift the spirits at times of blues.

Champagne is the number one sparkling wine in the world for good reason. With creamy, fruity undertones, a wonderful aroma and subtle nutty flavors, it’s easy to understand why wine drinkers find champagne so delectable.

What many don’t know, however, is that a sparkling wine behaves differently than a regular red or white wine. Because of this, champagne glasses take different shapes from the average wine glass, so as to maintain champagne’s wonderful characteristics, for as long as possible.

There are two main types of champagne glasses: the champagne coupe or saucer, and the champagne flute.

The Champagne Coupe

If you’re familiar with the champagne saucer, you probably find it similar to -but smaller than- a margarita glass. A champagne coupe consists of a medium sized stem with a saucer shaped bowl. This glassware was specifically created for champagne wines in England, in 1663. The saucer design, however, was purely aesthetical and did not entirely account for the distinct characteristics that champagne offers.

The ideal champagne glass must have a long stem, and a narrow opening at the top of the bowl. Just like in the case of regular wine glasses, the long stem allows us to hold the glass without altering the temperature of the drink with the warmth of our hands.

Because of the carbonation in sparkling wines, a champagne glass should also have a narrow opening to preserve the fizz that is contained in the drink. In the design of the champagne saucer this last aspect was not considered, causing the poured champagne to go flat and to taste bland shortly after being served.

The Champagne Flute

This issue was solved in the champagne flute design, where the glass has a longer stem with a long, and narrow holding chamber. This type of champagne glass is the most recommended to use, as it will capture the flavors of the champagne (and other sparkling wines), offering you a true taste of the spirit.

The type of material that the glass is made of will also affect carbonation loss. In general terms, smoother materials maintain fizz better, which is why solid crystal champagne glasses – while expensive – are extremely popular amongst wine enthusiasts.

Personalize your Champagne Glasses

Champagne glasses come in various different styles from which you can choose to make your glassware stand out of the crowd.

One of the most coveted champagne glass types is the footless flute. Shaped like a regular champagne flute but without a base, this type of footless glassware is set in a vase-shaped container – a stylish arrangement that simulates the look of a flower bouquet.

Another way to personalize your champagne glasses is to have them customized with your very own design. Many glassware companies offer personalized 4oz champagne glasses that are engraved, sandblasted or hand painted with your name, initials, company logo… you name it. Other options include 8oz champagne glasses, wine glasses and other spirit glassware, such as decanters.

If you are looking for an affordable way to enhance your champagne glasses, try hand painting them yourself. Take a look at our Glass Hand-Painting Guide and learn how easy it is to make your champagne glasses stand out of the rack.

Whether you prefer to personalize your champagne glasses or chose to keep it simple, make sure that you select a glass type that will respect the champagne’s quality and flavor. After all the winemaker’s efforts to make it the best wine possible, and because of the gratifying experience that it is to drink it, it’s only fair that we do our part to preserve the hard earned flavors that a glass of champagne brings to every special occasion.
