When going into tasting rooms, there are certain etiquette rules one should follow. If you are wondering to yourself what these rules entail, you are not alone. By the time you are finished with this article you have learned enough to begin your wine tasting adventure.

The most basic rule for wine tasting is to start with white and work your way to the reds. While you are tasting your white wines, experience dry wines before sweet or dessert wines. After that, move to red wines. Strong flavors can overwhelm the palate and can hinder your taste buds from experiencing the bouquets of each wine. Always save your dessert and ice wines for last. Those have the most sweetness and fullness attached to them and affects your palates ability to experience the next tasting.

When entering a wine establishment, don’t be timid. Go ahead and walk straight to the bar; most places are fairly relaxed and informal. After you take a seat, you will be approached by a bartender or a barista. If you do not know much about the wine you are about to sample, just ask. Most servers who do wine tastings enjoy explaining the wine and the flavors that are incorporated. Remember to work your way from whites, to red, to ports and ice wine.

Wine tasting can be an involved process. To help you understand various flavors of wine, keep a journal when participating in tastings. This will help you to identify specific flavors, regions, and full bodied wines. By keeping track of the wines you have tasted you will know exactly which wine you enjoy most. There are a few things to look for when doing a tasting if you are planning on becoming a wine connoisseur: color of the wine, legs, the aroma, and fullness or flavor of that wine. Smelling and tasting the wine poured for you during a tasting are the two most important steps in the examination your wine. It will give you a greater understanding of the types of wine and what you like in a wine. If you are interested in learning more, buy a book about wine. Details and specific aspects can be found in wine books that we have not even befun to dicuss.

Wine tasting basics have been addressed, but what about spitting out wine after tasting. Movies show wine tasters spitting out the wine after they taste. This is not always the approach that needs to be taken. The reason why people spit out the wine after tasting it is mainly because of the alcohol content involved. As we have all heard, alcohol can hinder your judgment and this is true even with our sense of taste. When are a formal wine tasting most people spit becuase of the large number of samples you are taking in. If you are judging wines, I suggest that you spit. Tasting 20 glasses can cause you to become intoxicated even if you spit it out because alcohol is absorbed through the skin in your mouth.

With an alcohol content as high as wine, having a snack with your tasting is common. If you are going to be having snack with your wine tasting there are few things to keep in mind here as well. Most establishments have cheese tray, chocolates, dried fruit and nuts to serve. White wines pair slightly better with cheese and dried fruit and red wines go well with the chocolates. But don’t be afraid to mix it up. Wine sampling is about finding the flavors that you enjoy the most, and you can’t be wrong when it comes to choosing flavor combinations that you enjoy. These are tips to help you begin to learn what your personal preferences are. For the sweeter ports and ice wines try it with chocolates, nuts and dried fruits. They seem to compliment the sweetness the best.

Those are the basic things to keep in mind when doing tastings. Now get out there and start learning about the several varieties of wines that are available to you. Soon enough you will be able to host your own wine tasting party. Wine tastings are a fun, so have enjoy the experience as you learn!

Deciding on the best way to let your wine breathe can be a difficult one. When I open a bottle of wine, I am ready to relax with my glass of wine. I generally don’t have much patience for allowing it to breathe. Why does wine need to breathe? By letting your wine breathe or aerate it allows for the full flavors to emerge and make the wine more palatable. While there are many wines that do not need to go through this process, it is good to know the little details that can make a big difference. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your wine to its fullest potential.

The reason why wines needs to breathe, or age, is because of tannins. Tannins can transfer into wine during the fermentation process from seeds and skins of grapes. They are a natural preservative that diminish overtime allowing fuller flavors to emerge. White wines and some red wines have low levels of these and therefore do not need aging, or periods of breathing, before drinking. Generally all red wines can benefit from aeration, but those that are lighter and fruitier generally don’t require much aeration.

The term breathing refers to the mixing of oxygen with wine allowing the breakdown of tannins. You can bring out fuller flavors of wine by using a decanter to allow the wine to mix with oxygen on a larger scale.

If you choose to allow your wine to breathe, you still have one more decision to make. Do you use a decanter or an aerator? If you have the time, about an hour, then use a decanter. This is plenty of time for your wine to mix with oxygen and for its full flavors to emerge.Pour your bottle of wine, or the portion you want to drink, into the decanter and let it remain there.Surface area is key to the amount of oxygen that can reach the wine; the more area, the sooner you can enjoy it.

If you just opened a bottle of wine five minutes before guests arrived, or you are only wanting to drink a single glass, decantors may not be the best way to aerate your wine. Aerators serve the same purpose of decanters, but can achieve the same effect in the time it takes you to pour a glass. There are two types, one that you hold over your glass as you pour or ones that you place directly into the bottle and acts as a wine pourer.

The Vinturi red wine aerator allows you to speed up the breathing process by mixing the perfect amount of air for the perfect amount of time to bring out the color, aroma, and flavor of your wines. All you do is pour your glass of wine through the aerator. It comes with a drip free stand so there is no mess to clean up.

The second option, which is more user friendly especially for multi-tasking person, is the Nuance Wine Finer . Pour a perfectly oxygen enhanced glass of wine with this easy to use aerator. After opening your bottle, just place the Wine Finer into the bottle and pour a glass of wine, you will hear “gurgling” noises which is the sound of the wine being aerated. One glass at a time, you can enjoy the full flavors that aerating allows. After pouring, just place to top on the bottle as you would a cork.

So before you decide whether to get yourself a decanter or an aerator, consider your time constraints. Before using the decanter, make sure there is sufficient time for the wine to breath. You can play it safe but allowing your wine to breathe in an instant with a Vinturi or Wine Finer.

What is wine?

For millennia, wine has been made from only two incredients. They are grape juice and yeast. Any fruit juice can be used, as a matter of fact, but grape juice is the most frequently used.

We tend to think of wine as a special treat, a gracious gift (as in a wine basket), a beverage of celebration or a drink to serve with a special meal. For much of history, though, it was a drink of necessity due to the often poor standards of the available water.

Yeast is the magical ingredient that turns grape juice into wine. Interestingly enough, there is actually wild yeast spores in the air and all that is really needed to make wine is an open container of grape juice and time. The result however, would probably not be the most palatable of beverages.

There are numerous strains of yeasts and the types used to make wine have been cultured just for this purpose. The strain of the yeast has an impact upon the wine’s eventual flavor. Well anyway, yeast is a living organism that feeds off of sugars in the grape juice in a process called fermentation. It is the fermentation that causes the sugars in the grape juice to turn into alcohol.

Once all of the fermentable sugars have been consumed, the yeast will fall to the bottom of the container. The wine is removed from the container, leaving the yeast, and is trasferred to another container to mature while waiting to be bottled.

There are black grapes and green grapes and grapes of various gradations in between. Regardless of the color of the grape the juice is always clear, or nearly so. If the skins are left in the juice during fermentation, a red wine is the result. A white wine results when the skins are removed.

What gives each wine its taste?

Even though there are very few ingredients, there are many things which influence the taste of wine. First of all, there are many varieties of grapes. Each grape variety will produce different flavors, aromas, and even textures. In addition, the soil and climate where the grapes are grown drastically affect these variables. Not only that, but the wine maker can control various things by the technique, temperature and yeast used during fermentation. Other variables such as fermenting or storing in oak barrels will also affect the taste.

Never fear, with all of these factors considered even the most avid wine drinker would ever be able to experience all of the different varieties of wine on the market today. Let the treasure hunting begin!

What is tannin?

All wines have tannin. That is the component that provides that sort of drying feeling on the tongue. It comes from the stems, seeds and skins, so red wines will have more tannin than will white wines. That accounts for the different tactile feeling between reds and whites.

Because of the brevity of this description, this has been only a tiny overview of what there is to know about wine. Hopefully, though, it has given you a few nuggets for your conversation at the next wine and cheese tasting that you attend.

Absinthe is now perfectly legal in many countries around the world but why were Absinthe and Absithe kits banned at all?

Why France Banned Absinthe?

France is wrongly known as the home of Absinthe but Absinthe was actually created at the end of the 18th century by Dr Pierre Ordinaire in Switzerland. It became popular in both France and Switzerland at the time just before the start of the First World War. It is a herbal alcoholic beverage flavored primarily with wormwood.

Many great writers and artists claimed that Absinthe gave them inspiration. People who were dedicated to Absinthe included Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, and Pablo Picasso.

Absinthe or the Green Fairy (La fee verte) became even more popular than fermented types of beverages such as beer and cider and upset wine producers by replacing wine as the most popular alcoholic drink in France. Absinthe’s popularity lead to blamed for France’s growing alcoholism problem and Doctors and prohibitionists claimed that Absinthe was as bad as cannabis, that it was psychoactive and caused convulsions, hallucinations, insanity, brain damage and death. It was also blamed for damaging French society And Prevalent Loose Morals.

After the heinous murder of a whole family by a known Absinthe drinker, prohibitionists convinced the government that Absinthe was a danger. Absinthe received a banned in France in 1915 and in many other countries in the early 1900s.

Absinthe substitutes and Absinthe styles of drinks such as Pernod Pastis and Ricards were developed to market to those missing the taste of Absinthe.

Thujone

Thujone is a monoterpene a key ingredient in Absinthe, and it was this chemical that was blamed for the dangerous effects of Absinthe. It was commonly Considered to produce similar effect to that of THC of cannabis.

Thujone, in high concentrations , is toxic and does affect the brain cells. It was falsly alleged that that pre ban Absinthe had 350mg of thujone per liter, but this has now been proved false. Tests on vintage bottles of Absinthe have shown maximum of 6mg thuone that can not produce any psychedelic or harmful effects.

Such tests and other research, articles and studies have shown that Absinthe is just as safe as any other drink with a high alcohol content.

Thujone content is regulatede in the EU and U.S. Beverages labeled “bitters” to contain up to 35mg per kg and alcoholic beverages with an ABV (alcohol by volume) over 25% to contain up to 10mg per kg of thujone will be allowed by EU law.

US law will allow up to 10 parts per million of thujone in beverages, these beverages are considered to be “thujone free”.

After all, if Absinthe is safe it was labelled as dangerous and why was Absinthe banned? Actual Reasons :-

- Mass hysteria – Absinthe was thought to be like – cocaine and heroin.
- Wine producers apprehensive about the the fall in popularity of wine.
- Unreliable testing and medical research.

Its one of those moments that everyone dreads, when the wine is making its way onto clothes or furnishings. First there is a pause whilst everyone puts down their own wine glasses, takes in what has happened, and then the suggestions start. Opinions vary across the board and everyone will want to give theirs, even if they all contradict each other. Here we take a look at the best action to take if and when you spill different types of wine

Red wine stains. If you don’t approach the stain in the right way, red wine can be a permanent addition to any fabric. There has long been a myth that the best action to take if you spill red wine is to pour white wine all over it. A much more effective method is to mix a spoonful of ammonia in with some talcum powder and then pour it all over the stain. Give the powder a good couple of hours to soak up all the wine and another couple to dry out itself, before hoovering the whole lot up. The other option is to use white vinegar and pour this over the wine which breaks up the colouring and makes it easier to mop up. Vinegar works best if its given around 45 mins to work its magic

White wine stains. There is a great deal less tannin (wine colouring) in white wine and so this means it is less of a headache when spilt. Warm soapy water is the best tactic here, just use a cloth to sponge it away. The smell can then be tackled using either a carpet cleaner or talcum powder again.

Champagne. This is whole different ball game altogether as you shouldn’t necessarily rush to clean up a champagne spill. This is because the bubbles in champagne are known to actually break up dirt particles and lift them out of the fabric. Putting glass vases or crystal vases over the spill will keep it from drying out and the cleaning effect will go on for longer.

Britain now imports far more wine than any other country in the world. We imported a grand total of 1.6 billion bottles in 2007, equating to thirty five standard bottles for every adult in the country which is absolutely staggering figure. The average British adult now drinks 12% more wine than they did just five years ago and forecasts predict our consumption will continue to grow far beyond that figure. Global wine and alcohol consumption is on the rise in past years and also forecast to grow considerably. The US are predicted to eventually become the world’s biggest consumer by 2012. The UK is 13th in the world, in terms of consumption per adult and despite Britain being a big importer, the amount we drink is completely dwarfed by other neighbouring European countries including France.

Red wine and white wine sales are on the increase as well as champagne, whisky and cognacs. This has incidentally caused an increase in the sale of almost all drinking glasses, including crystal glasses and the simple whisky glass. The British public consumed 720 million bottles of red wine and 764 million bottles of white wine in 2008 and that figure is expected to grow for 2009. However red wine is rapidly falling in popularity within society, as white wine and rose wine take larger shares of the increasing market industry.

Wine merchants have been extremely busy for the last year. Additionally, reports have indicated that many wine accessories such as glass vases, decanters and dinnerware have been selling extremely fast as a natural accompaniment to wine. The thirst for wine is set to deepen in emerging economies such as China and Russia, whose consumption levels are soon expected to overtake that of Spain in Europe which is another nation historically associated with wine. It predicted that the financial and economic crisis affecting many wine consumer countries worldwide would only have ‘limited’ consequences for the growth of the wine sector. The report forecast growth for the coming four years roughly in line with pre-crisis trends. Either way it is a very terrifying thought.

Champagne Delivery

There are findings all the time in the news about how wine effects the body, some positive, most negative. To be honest, most people are aware of the negative effects of drinking wine and are pretty happy when something positive is found. For example, there was a smile put on lots of people’s faces when news was released saying that those who drunk a glass of red wine each day were reducing their chances of heart attack because their blood was less viscous. Now there maybe another reason to dust of the glassware as scientists have found that wine actually aids digestive function.

A study that took place in Manchester, England recorded results from a study that involved giving some people a glass of wine (either white, red, rosé or champagne) to drink each evening for 2 month. The results concluded that digestive functioning was enhanced in those subjects who consumed a glass of wine for each evening that the study ran. Although white wine and rosé still had a positive effect on digestion, red wine had the biggest impact. Unfortunately, champagne did not seem to help digestion so you can put those champagne glasses away again for the time being. Also, those who drunk any more than one glass of wine actually had decreased function, so you have to limit yourself.

It is thought that although wine is a diuretic and so dehydrates the body if enough of it is consumed, it also works to relax muscles of the stomach and intestines. This allows food to be transported through the various digestive pipes easier and with less obstruction. You should however note that this research study monitored people for only a short amount of time and we do not know what the effects were long term. The overruling advice seems to be that you can enjoy the odd glass of wine without too much issue and it may even be good for you, but if you start feeling unwell or find youself drinking your wine out of glass vases then you may need to see a doctor

Ice wine is a sweet dessert wine with a medium to full body.Summer time nectar is what ice wine has been referred to. Those who have been fortunate enough to taste ice wine say that it has tropical overtones and bouquet. It also tends to have a somewhat lower alcohol content than other table wines. Ice wine, with its sweetness is balanced by acidic levels that are higher which keep it from being to overwelmingly sweet. These wines are decadent and used for a very exceptional occasion.

Many people use ice wine as a dessert, they go so far as to drizzle it over raspberries and pound cake and then add a smidgen of whipped cream. I have been told that some people drizzle it over their desired fruit such as cantalope. Be prepared though, some people say Ice wine is so sweet that they only have a tiny glass of it as an after dinner dessert, it is just too sweet to mix it with chocolate, It depends on how much remaining sugar the wine has. In researching this, I have found the remaining sugar content to be anywhere from 3 to 12%. 12% being almost intolerably sweet. Ice wine can be quite syrupy as the water has frozen in the grapes and the juice hard-pressed from the grapes is very concentrated in both flavor and sugar, It very much depends on the origin of the ice-wine.Ice wine from Germany can be very acidic, Canadian ice wine can be very rich.In some countries, by law, a hard freeze is required for a wine to be called Ice Wine. In Canada that is −8C (17F) and in Germany −7C (19F).

Ice wine is also known to be used in cooking, it is an ingredient used in desserts or even in a recipe for making French toast.

Vidal Ice wine:-This shimmery golden yellow wine has a mesmerizing aroma of lemon marmalade, caramelized oranges, peaches, pineapple and a touch of honey. The taste of this incredible Vidal ice wine carries a strong flavor of honey, lemon, star fruit, quince and brown sugar and end with a crisp mouth feel. The highest quality Vidal Blanc Icewine makes an superb combination with high fat or spicy foods.

Ice wine is created in small quantities only and only the finest of quality, so it is understandable that it would be quite costly. It can range anywhere from on up to 0 a bottle.Getting the real thing in Germany costs roughly

The folklore of Ice wine suggests that its primary production in 18th century Germany was accidental. A German vineyard owner away from his vineyard on business at harvest time came home to a frozen vineyard. He harvested and processed the grapes anyway and what was called Winter Wine back then, became the unique ice wine today. What a wonderful accident.

Ordering wine over the internet is a very popular method of buying, whether its from an online store or auction house. Some people wonder what it had to go through to get to their door step.

Everything moves into gear as soon as your order and payment are received by the company.

The first step is the printing of your order and having it run through the checking process. This checks that the wine is in stock and has actually been released for commercial sale.

Once this check has passed, warehouse staff will then be given the order and will set off to locate the products in the store or warehouse. These are then carefully packed into specially designed delivery packs, minimising movement, allowing for maximum freshness and preventing breakage.

Your order is then processed and sorted into the right area where a designated transportation company will come to collect it. The turnaround time on this is usually a couple of hours, but can vary if there is a backlog or stock problem.

The first part of transportation is always done by road, and if in the same country, will mostly be done by road. If its an international order, your order will go to either the airport or shipping port. This will depend on the type of shipping that has been paid for with the order.

This step can be the longest part of the journey. Orders that arrive at the airport can take a while to be processed. With air transportation cutting weeks off the shipping time, it is a very popular choice. Being a popular choice, this has resulted in a backlog of cargo at the airport which will usually add a few days to transportation.

If it goes via seaport, it will make it onto the boat in good time as boats have a large cargo capacity, however the trip itself takes a couple of weeks to complete.

Once its hit your shores it is then taken to a warehouse for processing. This will usually take one to two days. Once sorted, it will then be put in a truck or van and driven to your doorstep.

Champagne Delivery

With a turbulent past, the term Pinot Noir Chardonnay is now the name used to describe what was once formally known as Champagne. The name Pinot Chardonnay has been derived from the varieties of grapes used in its production, while the old name ‘Champagne’ is now only used by the wines produced from the same name region in France, due to European Union action to protect its name.

Following the change of name, nothing else much has changed with the taste and texture of the wines, keeping them as exciting and alluring as any other Champagne. Most Pinot Chardonnays are produced in the same way as many of the French Champagnes.
Moet and Chandon, the King of Champagnes and the distribution of them, has many a Pinot Chardonnay gem hidden in their portfolio. Some are produced in a fine estate in the prestigious wine growing area of the Yarra Valley of Australia.

Some seriously good ‘Sparklers’ emanate from New Zealand, particularly the north island.

The experimentation with various grape types has lead to some great successes (and failures) The most common types of grapes used in experimentation are Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz. There is a good reason that you don’t find a Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay. But the mix of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the sparkling fermentation process has been a tremendous success.

The Pinot Chardonnay is also available in 375ml and 200ml size bottles for the convenience factor, you know, picnics, BBQs, restaurants. The technological advances of late have allowed sparkling varieties to be as versatile as still wines with packaging and delivery.

And as if you weren’t convinced already, Pinot Chardonnays are also much cheaper in price than their champagne brethren, delivering the same quality and enjoyment at a fraction of the price.

Surprise your friends this weekend and set up a blind taste test and see if they can spot the difference!
